About the owner:
I have worked as a cook for a couple of years, but I was working much longer as a minshuku manager(5 years). My cooking is mainly self taught and my skills are nowhere near professional chef.
However, these basic home dishes are what people normally eat at home. Please come try cooking and eating Japan's common meals!

You will be cooking in my house in Kyoto.
I am happy to share all my knowlege, not only about food, but about Japanese life and Japanese people. Please do not hesitate to ask questions.

I want my guests to feel close to Japan as much as possible.
I do not like seeing travelers go back home with false image of a country.

If you have not yet decided what to do in Kyoto, please come visit!

Also, please do not hesitate to join the class if you are a beginner cook!
"I just wanted to enter a Japanese home"
"I just wanted to eat Kobe beef"
"I just wanted to eat good vegetarian food"
"I just wanted to meet Haruko" Any reason is ok!
As long as it leads you to the new experience of Japanese cooking!

I look forward to seeing you in Shimogamo, Kyoto!

Taro Saeki

About Shimogamo area:
Please come visit my little old house in a quiet residential area in Kyoto.
There are actually many things to see in the area:
It's only a 3min. walk to the Kamo river(the symbol river of Kyoto)
5min. walk to Shimogamo shrine (the symbol shrine of Kyoto)
10min. walk to the Imperial Palace(one of the symbols of Japan)

More Information

Dear vegetarian guests
Travelers come to Japan assuming they can easily find vegetarian food.  However, many are surprised to see how uncommon vegetarian food is in Japan.

This is because, Japanese people practice Buddism and Shinto.
Shinto allows us to eat all kinds of food including meat and fish, as long as we thank and eat all that is served.  Therefore, it is hard for vegetarian restaurants to exist in Japan.

Myself is not a vegetarian.  I enjoy cooking/eating vegetarian dishes, but only because they are healthy and tasty.  I thank and enjoy eating meat and fish as well.

Please bring back my favorite vegetarian recipes and try them at home!

Class can START from either 11am, 12pm, 3pm or 4pm(please choose).
*Duration of class is approx. 3 hours.

*We try to give lessons everyday, but we can only do 1 class a day.
